The Beginning

James Orange began his career as an apprentice plumber, learning his trade from the ground up before moving into self-employment and then into full-time employment where he flourished.

🏫

Early Struggles

When the company he worked for entered administration, James faced personal loss and depression. With a young family to support, he borrowed money from a relative to buy a van and start again.

👷

Taking The Leap

Starting with small plumbing jobs and using Rated People to find leads, James steadily grew his confidence and reputation, taking on larger and more complex projects over time.

🔨

First Big Break

A chance call about a care home bathroom in Nottingham opened the door to residential care work. James impressed the client and was asked to take on further contracts across their homes.

📋

Winning The Contract

When the care homes were sold, James tendered for the FM contract against established competition — including the firm where he had served his apprenticeship — and won, against all expectations.

🏗

Building TBS

In 2014 TBS was formally established. Six years later a school refurbishment opportunity transformed the business. Numerous SEN school conversion projects followed and continue to this day.

In His Own Words

Apprentice Years

My journey commenced as an apprentice plumber. Following my apprenticeship, self-employment initially presented challenges. I transitioned back to full-time employment, where I flourished for the next five years.

Facing Adversity

Unforeseen events meant that the company I was employed by entered administration, causing immense shock. Amidst this turmoil, I experienced the loss of my mother, leading to depression and a loss of motivation.

A New Start

Recognising the need to be strong for my young family, I sought a small loan from a family member to purchase a van. This pivotal decision marked the beginning of my entrepreneurial path.

Growing Confidence

Initially, I undertook small plumbing jobs, managing cash flow concerns. Gradually, I gained confidence in taking on larger projects. I also utilised a job tendering website called Rated People, where customers listed their jobs and I could pay for leads to tender for work.

Making Connections

During this period, I encountered Nick Bradshaw, who sought a heating system upgrade for his home. My exceptional workmanship earned me an invitation to quote jobs at a cash-and-carry facility he maintained.

TBS Established 2014

In 2014, TBS was established. I took the plunge into unfamiliar territories, engaging subcontractors outside of the plumbing industry to get the maintenance business off the ground. Despite early successes, the direction of the business changed when I received a call about renovating a tired bathroom at a care home in Nottingham.

Care Home Contract

This was a new experience for me — residential care. Eager to prove myself, I visited the client and secured the job. Subsequently, they requested my assistance with other works, which I graciously accepted.

The FM Tender

When the client informed me they were selling their care homes, I expressed my gratitude and wished them well. Whilst completing outstanding jobs, the new owners approached me to tender for the FM contract. I was unfamiliar with the tender process and dedicated much time to researching it, working with my wife to ensure timely submission.

Against All Odds

Three weeks later, I was invited to their head office. It became evident I had been shortlisted alongside another company — the firm where I had served my apprenticeship. After in-depth discussions and a cordial handshake, I was told they would be in touch. I left with little hope, recognising the immense resources of PWP Building Services, a multimillion-pound business.

The Phone Call

Two days later, I received a phone call that shattered all my expectations. The voice said “Mr. Orange,” and I answered promptly. To my astonishment, they extended an offer for the FM contract.

The Hard Years

The initial two years were the most challenging I have ever faced. I juggled multiple responsibilities, working extended hours and isolating myself from family and friends. The overwhelming workload left me feeling uncertain about my ability to succeed. However, my partner’s unwavering encouragement provided me with the strength to persevere.

School Refurbishment

Six years of hard work culminated in an opportunity to quote for a school refurbishment project. Our client had recently acquired an old school building with the vision of transforming it into a special needs school. I secured the job, leading to another remarkable success story — one that has continued to this day, with numerous school conversion projects delivered for our client.

Project Manager

I assumed the role of Project Manager, overseeing labour and simultaneously managing my FM business. This demanding task was executed independently, without any managerial assistance.

James’s Message

My message is to never give up. Regardless of your circumstances, seize opportunities and strive to excel in your endeavours. With determination, perseverance and a diligent work ethic, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve your goals.
